Scores on the Doors Seminars for Master Bakers

September 02, 2009

The secret to top marks in Scores on the Door, a new government backed food hygiene initiative, was revealed to the UK’s Master Bakers at a series of seminars by Manchester Food, Fire and Health and Safety Consultancy, Shieldyourself.

Shieldyourself have held two Scores on the Doors seminars in the North West for the National Association of Master Bakers (NAMB) and, due to the success of those events, will hold a third seminar in London this month (September).

Sarah Delaney, Head of Compliance Services at Shieldyourself, led the Northern seminars, which were held in Bolton and Shipley in June, and will also lead the London seminar at the Worshipful Company of Bakers on Thursday, September 24th.

She explained: “Scores on the Doors is a new scheme, which aims to let customers to see how hygienic a food establishment is by using an easy to understand star rating with five stars being the top and zero the lowest.

“The scheme is aimed at driving improvements in food hygiene by encouraging businesses to take action to improve their rating, which is available to the public online and can also be displayed on the premises.”

The Scores on the Doors initiative was approved by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) in December last year with 84 local authorities in the UK having already signed up to the scheme and a further 167 planning to join in the future.

Sarah commended the National Association of Bakers (NAMB), who arranged the seminars with Shieldyourself, on taking a proactive stance to understand the legislation and ensure their members continue to meet high levels of compliance.

“The seminars provided an opportunity for Master Bakers from all over the UK to find out the ins and outs of the legislation, including advice on how to ensure they are meeting the key criteria they will be inspected on,” Sarah continued.

“The best way a food business can prepare for the legislation coming into place in their area is to ensure they are meeting all the criteria and are ready and waiting for the Inspectors’ visit,” she concluded.

Shieldyourself can provide food businesses with an in-depth audit, which provides information on the number of stars a business would achieve if Scores on the Doors were operational in their local authority. For more information please visit www.shieldyourself.co.uk or call 0870 011 8250.
