What the Law says The Health and Safety at Work Act etc 1974 and associated
regulations related to the control of Legionella bacteria within the UK
which may arise from work activities and to premises controlled in
connection with a business. You are required to assess the risks from legionella bacteria that
may affect your staff / residents or members of the public and take
suitable precautions to reduce all risks to a minimum. This process is
known as a legionella risk assessment. An average of 250 cases of legionaires disease are reported each
year in the UK of which 12% will die. Legionnaires' disease is an
uncommon form of pneumonia that may have serious consequences for some
people, especially people in the older age groups. People become
infected when they breathe in air that contains legionella bacteria
which have been dispersed into the air in very fine droplets of water
known as “aerosols”. If the bacteria get inhaled into the lungs they
can cause infection. How we can help Shieldyourself have wealth
