Worcester Evening News - 29 June 2006
There were 167 cases of food poisoning reported in
Worcester last year, according to a food safety consultancy.
The number represents a fraction of the 79,283 cases reported
throughout the UK but Shieldyourself, the consultancy behind
the figures, has warned a dramatic increase could be on the
cards during the World Cup.
The organisation believes the temptation for people to drink
alcohol during games before preparing food could cause hygiene
standards to drop and lead to a food poisoning outbreak.
Mark Flanagan, Director of Shieldyourself, said: “On
average, over 600 people unnecessarily die each year in the
UK as a result of food poisoning, the majority of which could
have easily been avoided if basic health and safety rules
had been followed”. |
