Cost Sector Catering - October 2006 - Circ 14,000

A survey by health and safety experts, show an alarming 76% of UK businesses are unprepared for new fire regulations that put the onus on employers to ensure that safety of their premises. They are due to come into force on October 1.

With only 5% of people surveyed claiming to be ready for the new regulations, employers must now act or risk a substantial fine or even imprisonment for non-compliance.

Mark Flanagan , of survey organiser Shieldyourself explains: “Fire certificates will no longer be valid when the safety Regulatory Reform Order cone into force. With the average economic consequential cost of fire to business at £34,400 in 2004 and rising, the cost could be enough to close your business.

“Everyday thousands of people in the UK have their lives put unnecessarily at risk, as a result of negligent employers who contravene basic health and safety on the 'responsible person', the main duty holder who has control of the premises, such as the employer, the occupier of the owner. Employers must take on more responsibility and a more proactive role to prevent fires and protect people. Log on to www.firesafetylaw.communities.gov.uk.”
