The owner of a popular bar in Chertsey has been prosecuted for food safety offences, including keeping personal clothing in and around the kitchen.
Richard Gordon took 18 months to convert and restore an old town hall, a grade 2 listed building built in 1850, into the Bar 163. On 16 January this year he was accused by EHOs from Runnymede BC of failing to keep both his premises and food equipment clean and in good repair.
Mr Gordon pleaded guilty to four food safety offences at Woking magistrates court on 22 June and was fined £4,000. Costs of £950 were awarded to the council.
Leader of the council John Furey, said: ‘Our environmental health officers act in the interests of Runnymede residents and visitors.
‘Clearly the level of hygiene and cleanliness at Bar 163 was far from acceptable and in this situation we had no choice but to take legal action to stop this from continuing.’
The bar will continue to have routine unannounced visits by EHOs to ensure standards are maintained.
